Wuchiapingian (lopingian, Late Permian) Brachiopods from the Episkopi Formation of Hydra Island, Greece

چکیده
Twenty-three species of silicified brachiopods are described from four samples in the middle and upper parts of the Episkopi Formation from Hydra Island, Greece. These brachiopods are newly recorded from the region and together with previously described brachiopods from the same localities constitute the most diverse Lopingian (Late Permian) brachiopod fauna reported in southern Europe. The brachiopod fauna is Wuchiapingian as indicated by the associated conodonts. The fauna from Hydra exhibits strong palaeobiogeographical links with the faunas from South China. In addition, palaeobiogeographical affinities with the faunas of Thailand and the northern peri-Gondwanan region are also present, which implies a peri-Gondwanan origin for Hydra. Palaeoecologically, the brachiopod assemblage from sample EP in the middle part of the Episkopi Formation is dominated by pedically-attached and cementing genera and reflects moderate energy conditions above storm wave base and an abundance of hard substrates provided by sponges in the biohermal habitat. By contrast, the brachiopod assemblage in the other three samples from the upper part of the Episkopi Formation is dominated by spinose genera with a free-resting life habit, suggesting soft substrates in a quiet water environment below storm wave base on the outer part of the shelf. New taxa are Petinospiriferina gen. nov., Hustedia episkopiensis sp. nov., Waterhouseiella hydraensis sp. nov. and Xenosaria tenuis sp. nov.

Paleoenvironment, Biostratigraphy and Sequence stratigraphic studies of the Permian-Triassic boundrary of the offshore Persian Gulf, Iran: using an integrated approach.
Four supergiant and numerous giant gasfields have been discovered in the Southwest Iran which produce from Permian-Triassic carbonates belong to the upper member of Dalan Formation and Kangan Formation. In this research a detailed biostratigraphic, microfacies and sequence stratigraphic study of the late Middle Permian to Triassic successions was undertaken from 850 thin sections prepared from ...

Two new species of therocephalian therapsids are described from the upper Permian Teekloof Formation of the Karoo Basin, South Africa. They include two specimens of a whaitsiid, Microwhaitsia mendrezi gen. et sp. nov., and a single, small whaitsioid Ophidostoma tatarinovi gen. et sp. nov., which preserves a combination of primitive and apomorphic features. A phylogenetic analysis of 56 therapsi...
متن کاملPermian marine paleoecology and its implications for large-scale decoupling of brachiopod and bivalve abundance and diversity during the Lopingian (Late Permian)
The transition during the Permian–Triassic interval from brachiopod-rich benthic marine assemblages to communities with diverse molluscs has been well constrained by measures of global taxonomic richness but its ecological context has not been studied using quantitative relative abundance data. New relative abundance data from Early, Middle, and Late Permian silicified fossil assemblages from o...
متن کاملEcological consequences of the Guadalupian extinction and its role in the brachiopod-mollusk transition
—The Guadalupian (middle Permian) extinction may have triggered substantial ecological restructuring in level-bottom communities, such as turnover in dominant brachiopod genera or a shift from abundant brachiopods to mollusks, despite comparatively minor taxonomic losses. However, ecological changes in relative abundance have been inferred from limited data; as a result, constraints on importan...
متن کاملPseudophillipsia (Carniphillipsia) (Trilobite) from the Permian Jamal Formation, Isfahan, Iran
The aim of this study is to bridge a gap in the existence of Trilobites in the marine Permian successions of Iran by exploring a stratigraphic section of the Permian in Jamal Formation (Dizlu section). Based on comprehensive field studies and laboratory investigations three Trilobite specimens were identified in the study area including Pseudophillipsia (Carniphillipsia) dizluensis sp. nov., P...
